The Information On Macular Supplements

By Ryan Watson

Macular degeneration is a serious condition of the eye in which the eye loses its sense of perception, or sharpness, or more specifically, the sharp, central vision of the eye. The condition makes it difficult to read and even to see the fine print, such as the fine print on a warranty or a contract, for instance. It usually affects people 60 and over, and sometimes it is more specifically called age-related macular degeneration. The macular supplements have been found to work in amazing ways in managing this disease.

ARMD sometimes begins with a build-up of cellular waste products in the cone cells called drusen. Also, there may be a change in the amount of pigmentation in the cell (like the "age-spots" on our skin with aging). This is referred to as "Dry ARMD". Over time vision slowly worsens and over many years may lead to significant vision problems.

Risk factors include a family history, old age and a specific gene that greatly increases the danger of acquiring the disease. MD symptoms include blurred vision, distorted vision, inability to identify certain color variations, and lack of contrast sensitivity.

While many of these descriptions can be symptomatic of another issue, it is recommended that you seek medical advice if they begin to occur, so that macular degeneration (MD) can be ruled out. Especially after the age of 50, you need to seek medical consultation if you have any noticeable change in eyesight. Also, it's important to have a vision test least twice a year so that early detection of the disease is possible.

The causes of this problem can range from person to person. For some it will simply be age. It is well-known the people over the age of 55 suffer more eyesight issues and vision loss than younger people. As we age, our body is less able to repair vital systems and therefore our eyesight can suffer.

The wet form of MD is due to the excess accumulation of blood vessels growing behind the retina. This type can be treated with drugs or laser, reversing the development of the blood vessels that cause this variant of the illness.

Preventing the symptoms of MD could be as easy as taking an antioxidant supplement. Antioxidants are those substances like vitamins, which work to combat the negative effects of free radicals such as those found in air pollution. Examples of antioxidants are Vitamins A, C, and E.

Age-Related MD treatments also include experimental surgical procedures. New surgeries are being tried in an attempt to remove abnormal blood vessels in the eye. Other surgical techniques are directed at the abnormal blood vessels which are located right in the center of the macular.

The best plan of action is to speak to your doctor about which one is going to be best for you. MD needs to be taken seriously and acted upon, but thankfully it can be treated, although sight lost through wet MD cannot be regained.
