What Any Vision Tester Tests

By Molly Morse

A vision tester is a piece of equipment used for testing various properties of sight in human beings. The device screens for various abnormalities in sight and is very important for little kids. The device can be used to identify eye conditions and sight impairments that may later on lead to loss of vision or more dangerous conditions. There are different models of the device and all work differently.

Most eye disorders are easy to rectify at an earlier ages than at maturity. However this does not imply that grownups are not allowed to have their sight tested for impairments. In fact, in some careers, it is a primary necessity that before people are is employed, there sight must be screened for suitability. Such jobs comprise of public and personal drivers, security personnel, aviation, medicine, and the army among others.

Vision testing machines are capable of conducting all the tests and provide back feedback within a short time. The equipment is quick, precise, reliable, and a bit costly. The higher price of the machines renders services a little expensive also. The reliability and accuracy of the outcomes renders the higher service cost worthwhile.

The testing process is simple and short making it possible to be conducted in the office of an optician. The condition of the eye is revealed in a short while after the tests are conducted. Young children who are incapable of concentrating are at an advantage because this machine does not consume a lot of time. There are many generations of eye screening machines and the latest models have more powerful features than the previous ones.

There are many tests that this equipment can be used to do. Some of those tests include visual acuity, refraction, color vision test, and refraction. Visual acuity tests are used to gauge the ability of an eye to see details at near and far distances. It is the most common eye test carried out. Each eye is tested independently although some equipment allow testing of both eyes at the same time.

Refraction test targets at establishing the refractive error in eyes. It is done after visual acuity test. Farsightedness and nearsightedness occur when the eyes are unable to focus light from objects on the retina correctly. This result into blurred sight. This test needs to be performed as a routine for individuals who already wear glasses or contact lenses. It could also be performed in case the results from visual acuity test indicates that the eyesight is below normal levels.

Visual field tests aim at determining presence of gaps in the peripheral vision. This examination requires one to focus their sight in a given direction and tell what they are able to see on the sides. Color test checks for the ability of an eye to differentiate between various color shades.

A vision tester can be controlled by a remote control device. These models are small and portable for use in field applications. The user manual that accompanies them explains the usage of the device explicitly making it usable by people with little or no prior experience.
