Today, more Americans are becoming the victims of sleep apnea as statistics show that over 12 million Americans are currently suffering from the condition. This is a disorder of the breathing system, and is characterized by breathing stopping while the victim is asleep. The most common of these conditions is brought about by the failure of the brain to transmit the right signal to the breathing muscles. Patients can be operated on or they may use breathing devices and they will just be okay. What people do not know is that there are equally effective at-home tips that, when performed regularly, will significantly reduce cases of sleep apnea therapy.

Losing weight is a big step in the right direction insofar as curbing the menace is concerned. In milder forms of this disorder, a simple thing that can cure is by shedding a few pounds. In addition to helping you reduce the instances of apnea, shedding weight is also a good tenet of healthier living. Being obese can cause all forms of heart complications.

Sleeping on your side, and not on your back or stomach, is another simple yet effective method of dealing with this problem. The main goal of this exercise is to prevent the soft palate and the tongue from sliding back. When they slide back, this causes an airway blockage.

Another thing is to stimulate the soft palate. Throat exercises are also important in speech therapy, in addition to being able to control your breathing as you sleep. The main aim of the exercise is to pronounce an oral vowel, in which the air is able to escape solely by way of mouth. Make an effort to alternate and repeat the oral vowels continuously for three minutes a day. They include words like coil, coal, kale, keel among others.

Performing tongue exercises for at least three minutes everyday is also one way of naturally keeping this disease at bay. These exercises include brushing the lateral and superior surfaces of your tongue especially when it is positioned at the floor of your mouth. Another exercise is to put the tip of your tongue against the front side of the palate, all the while sliding it backward.

Another important tip is to practice pronouncing open vowels 3 minutes daily. The exercise is composed of pronunciation of open vowels while inhaling through your nose and at the same time exhaling though the mouth. The words in question are those having long vowel sounds at their ends, and they include tree, bee, cry and fry among others.

You could also learn pronouncing open vowels especially three times a day. As you speak these words, breathe in through your nose and exhale through mouth. The words here contain long vowel sounds. These include fee, cry, bee, try among others.

Although medical procedures like surgery and using breathing devices work in treating sleep apnea therapy, they are expensive and require money. Before going for these options however, it would not hurt to give local remedies a chance. Just be consistent and persistent and you will succeed and regain your sound sleep back.
